Literacy Shirts

One of our goals at the Early Childhood Education Center is to support early literacy through a coordinated effort between classroom instruction and family education. One of the ways we accomplish this goal is to give every student a literacy shirt to wear on a special day every month.

The shirt looks something like this:

This logo and slogan with the “Se: He Ki” in the background represents our O’odham/Piipaash maze of life, the family unit, and the goal of increasing literacy in families for the future of our Community children. ECEC educator Sam Anderson created the logo.

Students will wear this shirt as a reminder of the benefits of sharing a book.

SE:HE KI (THE MAN IN THE MAZE)
The Legend of Se: He Ki helps children understand the meaning of life. The maze depicts experiences and choices we make in our journey through life. It illustrates the search for balance physically, socially, mentally, and spiritually. A person’s dreams and goals are found in the middle of the maze. Legend says that when we reach the center, the Sun God greets us, blesses us, and passes us into the next world.
